Hysteroscopy is a common gynecologic procedure performed to evaluate the inside of the uterus. The surgeon is able to see inside the uterine cavity with a very small camera. This allows me to detect the presence of any structural problems like polyps (soft tissue growths) or fibroids in the uterine cavity. If I find something that needs addressing, I can usually remove it during the same procedure.
A very small camera, called a hysteroscope, is placed through the vagina, through the cervix (the opening of the uterus), and into the uterine cavity. I will be able to see the shape and contours of the uterine cavity, the tubal ostia (where the fallopian tubes connect to the uterus), and if any pathology is present. If a polyp or fibroid needs to be removed, specific instruments to do so can be placed into the uterus through the hysteroscope.
Hysteroscopy can be performed for many reasons:
· Abnormal uterine bleeding
· Postmenopausal bleeding
· Infertility evaluation
· Performance of endometrial ablation (a procedure to burn the inside lining of the uterus resulting in a decrease or elimination of menstrual bleeding)
