Vaginal surgery is the most minimally invasive approach to major gynecologic surgery – because there are no incisions on the abdomen at all! All of the surgical work is performed within the vagina itself.
Many types of procedures can be performed via vaginal surgery, including:
· Vaginal hysterectomy
· Vaginal hysterectomy with or without removal of fallopian tubes or ovaries
· Pelvic organ prolapse surgery
· Midurethral sling placement for stress urinary incontinence
There are many benefits of vaginal surgery, including:
· No abdominal incisions
· Less pain
· Quicker return to normal function
· Decreased risk of complications like infection
· Usually can go home same day
Although this answer varies depending on the surgical goal, a vaginal surgical approach may be a great option for some people. For example, performing hysterectomy vaginally may be the best option if you have had a vaginal delivery before and the size and shape of your uterus is not too large or bulky.
Some surgical goals are not best achieved via the vaginal route. For example, an evaluation of pelvic pain or endometriosis is better performed either laparoscopically or robotically.
