During a C-section, an incision is made on the uterus. After the delivery of the baby, the incision on the uterus is sutured back together. Sometimes the repaired incision does not heal well, and the muscle of the uterus in this area becomes thin and weak.
Sometimes there are no symptoms, but some women may experience bothersome irregular brown discharge outside of their menstrual cycle. A Cesarean scar defect or isthmocele may also negatively impact fertility. Reproductive endocrinology and infertility specialists usually recommend repair of a cesarean scar defect before you attempt in vitro fertilization.
Repair of a cesarean scar defect / isthmocele needs to be individualized and also depends on your goals. Some defects can be managed hysteroscopically. Other defects may need laparoscopic repair.
